As an interior designer, I have noticed a growing trend towards open floor plans in Irish homes for the last few years. The demand for open plan kitchen-dining and living rooms is on the rise, and I am often tasked with creating functional and balanced spaces for my clients. While it is important to cater to their personal style, I also have to consider all the elements of the space to ensure it is practical and aesthetically pleasing. Creating an open plan space is not just about the appearance, but also about creating a multi-functional room that works for the whole family. In order to achieve this, there are three key elements to consider: layout, connection, and balance.

#Layout
Layout is crucial in open plan spaces, as these rooms are often the most used in a home. It is important to make sure the space is practical and caters to the family's needs. When planning the layout, I recommend making a list of all the activities that will take place in the space, such as eating, homework, relaxing, and watching TV. On top of that list, add "free flow" as a priority. By considering these activities, you can design a layout that allows for easy movement between areas without any obstructions.

#Connnection
Connection is also vital in an open space. To create a cohesive and visually appealing space, it is important to connect different elements such as colours and styles. For example, if you have a blue kitchen island, incorporate splashes of that colour throughout the space to tie it together. Similarly, if you have a traditional kitchen, use a few modern elements in the rest of the room to create a seamless blend of styles. This will result in a well-balanced and unified design that makes the space feel like one cohesive unit.

#Balance
Lastly, balance is key to creating a successful open plan space. This includes considering the balance of colours, lighting, layout, and style. Ensure that the space feels equal and harmonious from all corners, and that no one area feels overpowering. By keeping these elements in mind, you can create a space that is not only visually appealing but also functional and comfortable for the whole family.

In conclusion, open plan spaces offer a multitude of benefits, but it is important to carefully consider the layout, connection, and balance in order to create a successful and well-rounded design. By following these key principles, you can transform a traditional space into a modern and functional oasis that the whole family will love.
